Los Angeles, California (October 31 2009) – It was announced today by West Coast entrepreneur Jim Anzide that his Out & About Tours, the first and only bus tour that offers an in-depth yet entertaining look at LGBT history and its hotspots not found in your average LA travel guide, will make its entrance on the LGBT stage in West Hollywood on Halloween day. Anzide said the tour, aimed at members of all communities 21 years of age and older, will run every Saturday and Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m departing from the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum in West Hollywood. Tickets, available online at www.outandabout-tours.com, cost $75 per person and include two drink tickets (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks throughout the tour. Just as LGBT culture is celebrated during WeHo’s annual Halloween Carnival, Out & About tours embraces and examines that culture with a roving reporter’s approach.
“This Halloween, we will show you Hollywood like nobody has ever dared,” says founder Jim Anzide. “From West Hollywood to Downtown and all points in between, our talented guides will not only show you a good time, but blow the dust off over a century of closeted stars, underground bars and gay rights battle scars. Hop on board, grab a cocktail and hang on!”
With more than 100 points of interest on a journey that begins in West Hollywood and winds its way through Downtown LA, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Hollywood before making its way back, the tour mixes campy entertainment with heart-breaking personal stories of struggle, failure and success. The tour enlightens, educates and encourages riders to reflect on how history has shaped today’s gay-experience.
“Doing the research for this tour has opened my heart and mind in ways I can’t begin to articulate,” says Anzide. “Knowing that people have lost their lives, loved ones, homes, and careers so that I can do something as simple as go to a bar in West Hollywood and dance with my friends or walk hand-in-hand with someone of the same sex, is overwhelming. With the passing of Prop 8 and this year being the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, it just seemed to be the right time for me to take part in educating and empowering members and allies of the LGBT community in the best way I know how – through entertainment.”
True to Anzide’s vision, the tour is not only intellectually and emotionally stimulating, but also pure fun. From the attentive and knowledgeable male and female crew and lively tour guide (Anzide himself) to the audience’s participation with cheers for LGBT heroes and jeers for its villains, not to mention free snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), this tour excites and entertains. After the tour, the fun continues at an after party where riders get the opportunity to make new friends, share experiences and mingle.
The tour gives back to the community it celebrates. Each month, Out & About will donate a portion of its sales to a different LGBT charity. The first beneficiary is ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. ONE is dedicated to collecting, preserving, documenting, studying, and communicating LGBT history, its challenges, and its aspirations. Much of Anzide’s research for the tour came directly from ONE’s archives in Downtown Los Angeles.
