Live Homosexual Acts 2007 (part 1/7)

“Live Homosexual Acts” is one of the activities that Queer and Allied Activism (QuAA) at the University of Virginia organized during Proud to Be Out Week on November 2007.

All of the stories presented here are real. University of Virginia students wrote to us about their experiences with homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender issues, asking us to listen to their unheard realities.

The title of this event was chosen deliberately. Queer and Allied Activism (QuAA) is committed to raising student awareness of queer issues on Grounds. Whatever response the title, “Live Homosexual Acts”, may have stirred in you, we hope you understand our purpose tonight is to provide a space for queers and allies alike to learn from their peers. Further, the Chapel provides us with a beautiful venue appropriate for sharing these stories, and that is the only function it serves us tonight. Queer and Allied Activism is neither condemning nor seeking reconciliation with any religious faith.

We hope this event will lead to a greater appreciation and respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals at the University and in the community. Please join us in listening to these honest perspectives from the UVa student body.

We graciously thank students from UVA Grounds for Discussion and Queer and Allied Activism who have volunteered to read these stories. Please note that the performer should not be interpreted to be the writer of the piece.

Another very special thank you goes to the Arts and Sciences Council for co-sponsoring this event. It is good to know that allies such as ASC exist. Also we would like to thank the Film Makers Society for recording Life Homosexual Acts and providing us with a record for future students to view and learn from.

And finally, the greatest thank you goes to the writers of these stories. We praise your courage and initiative to write and submit these monologues. Your story is valuable to the entire community, and we emphatically thank you for giving us the opportunity to share it tonight.

These are their voices. Thank you for listening.

(Recorded Live on November 15, 2007)
